Meet the Artists: Guitarist Walter Stauss has translated the African kora (harp) music to guitar and the results are absolutely amazing. This California guitar maestro’s songs are full of the groove and fire of an African dance party, the dynamics and textures of a string orchestra, and the back-porch soul of American roots music.  In addition to touring solo in the US and abroad, Walter has collaborated with wide-ranging talents, including a duo with 2010 Grammy-winning kora player Mamadou Sidibe, guitar virtuoso Alex de Grassi, and The Burns Sisters.
Bassist Sam Bevan has established himself as one of the most versatile and creative bassists in the Bay Area. Bevan is able to canvas a large musical landscape where jazz, funk, r&b, folk and Afro-cuban disciplines joyously intermingle and he has played with many well-known musicians including David Grisman and Joe Craven.

The Acoustic Vortex is rapidly becoming the center (vortex?) of the Marin County acoustic music scene. It's a house concert series, but it's also a nonprofit promoting youth performance, benefit concerts for other nonprofits, and general reverance and revelry wherever good acoustic music can be found. We're thrilled to be sharing a show for the first time with our good Southern California friends, Luke Halpin and Stephanie Bettman, who are amazing instrumentalists, singers and songwriters. Blistering fiddle and mandolin, sweet clear vocals, and an old-fashioned song sensibility make them irresistable.

Googie's

Calaveras at Googie's - 7:30

154 Ludlow St. NYC NY USA 212-533-7237
Price: $5 suggested
Googie's is a funky upstairs performance space at The Living Room, a lower East Side bar. New York Magazine says it "makes for an endearingly ramshackle performance space, complete with musty curtains, scattered holiday lighting, and an ivory-white baby grand." Extreme casualness ensues. We've been there a couple of times and surprisingly, seen some great acoustic acts. There's another stage downstairs, there are huge sound-sucking curtains everywhere, and the bar's in the front where you can get a drink in relative quiet. Each act plays one set, passes the hat, and out they go. If we can make it there . . .
